Is AfterQuery legit?

Researched October 2026 · 21 sources

Yes. AfterQuery is a real, venture-backed San Francisco company that pays approved work every Friday through Stripe. You are paid only for approved work, and workers report long review backlogs, projects paused mid-task, and account closures that left submitted work unpaid. It pays $50–$125/hr typically (median $75/hr).

Actively hiring, pay independently measured from its live feed
Who is behind it

Spencer Mateega (CEO) and Carlos Georgescu founded AfterQuery in 2025, in Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch. It raised a $30 million Series A at a $300 million valuation in April 2026, and Forbes reported in September 2026 that a new round values it at $3.2 billion. NVIDIA says it trained its Nemotron 3 Ultra model partly on AfterQuery tasks.

Getting paid

AfterQuery pays every Friday through Stripe, to a bank account in your own name, for the previous week of approved work; it takes no fees, and Stripe holds the first payout for 7 days. Only banks in the countries on its supported list can be paid.

Worker ratings

Trustpilot 2.8/5 (112 reviews) · Glassdoor 3.3/5 (9 ratings). Read October 2026.

Verified active

217 open roles on AfterQuery, independently checked 18 Oct 2026.

Who can join

Remote, but it can pay only banks in the countries on its supported list; Brazil, Nigeria, Egypt and Japan are among those it cannot pay.

Fake AfterQuery recruiters

No AfterQuery-specific impersonation cases turned up. AfterQuery emails only from notifications@afterquery.com or a person's @afterquery.com address, onboards at experts.afterquery.com and charges no payout fees; fake recruiters usually start on text, WhatsApp or Telegram and later ask you to pay.

What people praise

  • Many reviewers call it a genuine operation that pays dependably once work is approved.
  • Reviewers often describe onboarding as smooth and task guidelines as clear.
  • Some coders report solid earnings; one says he earned over $3,500 in about three months.

What people complain about

  • Submitted work, assessments and applications can wait weeks or months for review, and pay waits for approval.
  • Projects pause or end with little notice, and some workers say hours of task work then went unpaid.
  • Some reviewers say task caps and pay tied to accepted work left their real hourly earnings far below the advertised rate.
  • New projects are scarce and short, with long gaps between them.

What has gone wrong

  • September 2026. Two Trustpilot reviewers said in late September 2026 that their accounts were closed for an unnamed Terms of Service breach and that work still under review was forfeited unpaid. AfterQuery has not replied to negative Trustpilot reviews; its terms let it end access at any time without notice.
  • July 2026. Workers on a task-authoring project called Golden Dog said submissions were paused without warning in July 2026, after some had spent 4 to 10 hours on tasks that then went unpaid. A September 29 review says the project was later ended with ready-to-submit tasks left unaddressed.
Who it suits

Best for: Experienced engineers, scientists, lawyers, clinicians and finance professionals who want well-paid project work and can absorb unpaid assessments and gaps between projects. Not for: Anyone who needs steady weekly income, or whose bank account is in a country AfterQuery cannot pay, such as Brazil, Nigeria or Japan.

How to get started on AfterQuery

Researched October 2026

Check that AfterQuery can pay a bank in your country, create an account with Google, apply to a specific role with your resume (or take an open pool's one-shot assessment), complete the interview and skills assessment if asked, finish onboarding (two agreements, Persona phone and ID checks, Stripe payout setup), then wait to be invited to a project; approved work is paid every Friday through Stripe.

Who can join

  • Be 18 or older and able to form a binding contract with AfterQuery (its Terms of Service).
  • Real domain expertise. AfterQuery says it welcomes 'experts with advanced degrees, significant industry experience, or demonstrated expertise in their field,' and that every expert goes through a verification process that includes credential checks and expertise validation. No prior AI experience is required.
  • A bank account in a country AfterQuery can pay through Stripe. On 9 October 2026 its Payment Countries page listed 95 supported countries (including the US, UK, Canada, India, the Philippines, Kenya, Pakistan, Mexico and most of Europe) and 48 unsupported countries and regions, including Brazil, Nigeria, Egypt, Japan, South Korea, Argentina, Bangladesh, Colombia and China.
  • A Google account. You sign in with Google (there is no separate password), and each person, email address and identity may hold only one AfterQuery Experts account.
  • For verification and payouts: a government-issued photo ID, a device with a camera for a selfie, a phone that can receive a text code, a bank account in your own legal name in the same country you select in Stripe, and your SSN if you are in the US.
  • Whatever the specific role requires. Each listing sets its own bar: for example, Medical MD Expert ($160/hr) requires an enrolled or completed MD degree from an accredited institution with current licensure in a recognized jurisdiction.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Check your payout country first

AfterQuery pays through Stripe to a bank account in one of the countries on its Payment Countries page. If your country is on the unsupported list (it includes Brazil, Nigeria, Egypt, Japan and South Korea), AfterQuery asks you not to start work: some of those countries may be added as Stripe expands, others are restricted for legal and compliance reasons.

  2. 2

    Create your account with Google

Sign in at experts.afterquery.com with Continue with Google; there is no separate password. Always use the same Google account: signing in with a different one starts a second account, which is not allowed (one account per person, per email address and per identity).

  3. 3

Apply to a role with your resume, or take a pool assessment

Every opening on the board at experts.afterquery.com/apply states an hourly rate; the open roles and what they pay today are on this page. Most are specific roles where 'What you'll need' is your resume and you click Apply Now. Nine are open expert pools (for example General AfterQuery Expert (Data Annotator) at $42.50/hr, plus Legal, Math, Medical and Advanced Coding pools) where you click 'Take the assessment' instead: one assessment, ongoing matches.

  4. 4

Do the interview if you are asked

AfterQuery's How It Works lists an interview after you create an account: you either meet with its team or take an asynchronous video interview to discuss your experience and goals. AfterQuery does not say which roles require it.

  5. 5

Pass the skills assessment (one attempt)

Each expert pool has one assessment, built to resemble real project work rather than an abstract multiple-choice test. You see a time estimate before you start, it is unpaid, and it cannot be retaken. There is no pass or fail notice: your fit is one of the factors used to match you to projects in that pool.

  6. 6

Finish onboarding: agreements, phone, ID and Stripe

At experts.afterquery.com/onboarding, complete four required steps in order: sign the Non-Disclosure Agreement and the Data Submission Form, verify your phone with a 4-digit text code through Persona, verify your identity with a government ID and a selfie through Persona, and set up Stripe (business type, country, then Stripe's own ID, bank and tax details). Connecting LinkedIn is optional but improves your chances of being picked for projects. AfterQuery says to set aside 10 to 15 minutes, and you cannot be paid until all four required steps are done.

  7. 7

    Get invited to a project

If you are selected, a welcome email from notifications@afterquery.com lists your next steps, which can include joining a Slack workspace or a project channel in the Chat tab and sending a short message to your project admin so the team can confirm your account and share the project guidelines. Official email only comes from that address or a person's @afterquery.com address.

  8. 8

Do approved work and get paid on Friday

Pay covers approved work in each Monday-to-Sunday period: after the week closes the work is reviewed and approved, then paid through Stripe on the following Friday by 11:59 p.m. PT. Stripe holds your first-ever payout for 7 days, and your bank usually takes a few business days after Stripe sends it.

AfterQuery pool skills assessment (plus an interview step)

AfterQuery's How It Works lists two checks after account creation: an interview (with its team, or an asynchronous video interview about your experience and goals) and a short skills assessment in your domain. Its Help Center describes the assessment: each expert pool has one, it shows your fit for that pool, and it is one of the factors used to match you to projects. It is unpaid, it cannot be retaken or reassessed, and you get no explicit pass or fail result. Passing does not guarantee a project: AfterQuery connects people to projects as opportunities come up.

Format

One assessment per expert pool, built to resemble real project work rather than an abstract multiple-choice test. Length varies by pool and a time estimate is shown before you start. One attempt only. Pools are assessed independently, so a result in one pool does not carry over to another, and you may take the assessment for any open pool you are interested in.

How to prepare

  • Read the time estimate shown before you start and do it in one focused sitting. There is only one attempt, so AfterQuery says to submit with the care you would give real project work.
  • Pick the pools where your expertise is real and current. You may take any pool's assessment, but each is assessed on its own and nothing carries over.
  • Expect real work, not quiz questions. Role pages describe the work (for example, writing case studies or scenarios that challenge AI models and evaluating AI-generated answers for accuracy and adherence to current guidelines), so practise doing exactly that in your field.
  • Follow every instruction precisely and review before you submit. AfterQuery's Work Guidelines say work is evaluated on accuracy, consistency, completeness, timeliness and communication, and that quality matters more than speed.
  • Connect LinkedIn during onboarding: AfterQuery says it improves your chances of being picked for projects.

Why people get rejected

  • Rushing the single attempt: assessments cannot be retaken or reassessed.
  • Applying outside your real specialty. AfterQuery's own February 2026 subreddit post, as quoted by Annotation Academy, says the platform is not ideal for candidates without demonstrated domain expertise.
  • Missing a role's hard requirement, such as an MD with current licensure for Medical MD Expert, or a large private codebase you own for Advanced Coding Expert.
  • Failing identity verification: Persona flags blurry photos, screenshots, photos of a screen and expired documents, and your account name must match your ID, including middle names.
  • A bank account in an unsupported country, or not in your own legal name: AfterQuery cannot pay it, and a country or name mismatch puts Stripe payouts on hold.
  • Not actually a rejection: AfterQuery sends no pass or fail notice, and silence usually just means there is no matching project for your pool yet.
How long it takes

AfterQuery publishes no timeline from application to first paid work. Its support account reportedly said in July 2026 that it grades assessments within three days, does not publish scores, and invites people to projects based on them, so 'Graded' is not an acceptance. In a review of 327 Reddit comments, waits were the most common complaint: 11 accounts across 11 threads (March to September 2026) described applications or assessments with no update for weeks or months. Once you are matched and have approved tasks, payouts follow the Friday payment cycle.

When you get paid

Rates are in US dollars and come from your offer or contract. Each Monday-to-Sunday week is reviewed and approved after it ends, then paid through Stripe every Friday by 11:59 p.m. PT (work from the current week is paid the following Friday). Stripe holds your first-ever payout for 7 days, which AfterQuery cannot override, and banks usually take a few business days after Stripe sends it, so by AfterQuery's own schedule the money for your first week arrives roughly three weeks after that week starts. AfterQuery charges no fees. Stripe is the only payout method (bank accounts only, no cards; Wise is planned but not yet available), and outside the US you are paid in your local currency.

Tips to get accepted

  • Check the Payment Countries list before you spend hours on applications or assessments. AfterQuery asks people in unsupported countries not to start work, because it cannot pay them.
  • Use one Google account and one legal name everywhere. Signing in with a different Google account creates a forbidden second account, and a name that differs between your AfterQuery account, your ID, Stripe and your bank causes payout holds.
  • Read each role's requirements literally before applying. Some are hard gates: Advanced Coding Expert ($85/hr), for example, requires hands-on Docker experience and access to a large, complex, private codebase you own and can author tasks against.
  • Expect uneven review speeds across tracks. One reviewer who applied to six AfterQuery tracks between 11 May and 23 June 2026 had one (Software Engineering) accepted within days while the rest sat 'Under Review' for weeks, one for more than a month.
  • Lead with your specialty. In worker reports summarized by Annotation Academy, contributors with domain expertise describe far more work than those in the open generalist pool. Because per-task work earns nothing until it is approved, the review advises preferring hourly projects, or starting a per-task project with one or two tasks and waiting for approval before doing more.
  • Only trust email from notifications@afterquery.com or a person's @afterquery.com address. If a message about AfterQuery work comes from anywhere else, do not reply or share details; write to support@afterquery.com instead (and never attach photos of your ID).

What isn't public

  • AfterQuery does not publish a timeline from application to first paid work, an acceptance rate, or how assessments and interviews are scored. It sends no pass or fail notice, so applicants cannot see the difference between 'not selected' and 'waiting for a matching project'.
  • The order of steps is not documented as one path. The How It Works section lists account, interview, assessment, then projects; role pages list only a resume under 'What you'll need'; and the Help Center describes onboarding (agreements, ID, Stripe) separately, with Stripe setup also offered when you accept an offer. AfterQuery does not say which roles require an interview or an assessment.
  • The interview's length and format are not published by AfterQuery. One third-party review describes a 15-30 minute discussion, says the assessment must be completed within 48 hours of the invite, and says AfterQuery quotes 7-10 days from application to first work. We could not find any of these on AfterQuery's own pages, so they are not stated as facts here.
  • AfterQuery's own pages disagree on some payment details: the experts homepage FAQ mentions 'multiple payment options', and the older Contract Work Details page mentions per-task pay, minimum thresholds and 3-5 business days of processing, while the dedicated Payments page says Stripe is the only method, there are no AfterQuery fees, and payouts go every Friday. This guide follows the Payments page.
  • Rates move with demand. On 9 October 2026 the highest posted rate on the board was $175/hr; earlier reviews reported listings up to $250/hr for rare specialties, which we could not see on the current board.
  • Reddit blocked our direct reading of AfterQuery's subreddit, so statements attributed to AfterQuery staff there (that assessments are graded within three days, the Friday cycle 'once you're matched', and that the platform is not ideal without demonstrated domain expertise) are as quoted by Annotation Academy, not read by us.
  • AfterQuery states that assessments are unpaid; it does not say whether interviews, project onboarding or training time are paid.
