Is Appen legit?
Yes. Appen is a 30-year-old data company listed on the Australian stock exchange, and its CrowdGen platform does pay contributors each month, but recent worker reviews are overwhelmingly negative. Work is not guaranteed and pay is set by country and language, not skill, so it can be very low; recent reviewers also report logged hours cut from their pay and accounts closed after failed ID checks.
, AITraining.jobs lists 55 open Appen roles; 5 of them state an hourly rate.

What people praise
- Older Trustpilot reviews from long-time contributors (2020 to 2021) describe years of on-time monthly payment and the freedom to choose projects and hours.
- A few 2025 and 2026 CrowdGen reviewers call payments reliable and the pay competitive.
- CrowdGen shows each project's rate before you begin, lets you join several projects at once, and says it never asks contributors to pay to join.
What people complain about
- Several September 2026 CrowdGen reviewers say ID verification failed without explanation and their accounts were then closed or blocked.
- Onboarding often leads to no paid work: reviewers describe waiting months for a project, or an account deactivated soon after sign-up for lack of projects in their location.
- Pay is set by country and language, not by skill; a July 2026 review found one account averaging $2.20 an hour.
- Reviewers describe little live support and disputes that go nowhere, and Trustpilot shows Appen has not replied to negative reviews.
What has gone wrong
- September 2026. In September 2026 several Trustpilot reviewers on CrowdGen's Project Origami said only part of their logged time was paid after its rules changed: one says 9 of 47 hours, another about $20 of roughly $254 claimed at an advertised $4.10 an hour.
- January 2024. On 22 January 2024 Appen said Google would end its contract, with all projects stopping by 19 March 2024. Google had brought Appen US$82.8 million of revenue in 2023, and the shares fell 37% that morning. Appen said it had no prior knowledge of the decision.
- May 2023. About six Google raters working through Appen were terminated on 31 May 2023 after speaking out publicly about their working conditions, according to the Alphabet Workers Union, which filed labor charges. On 23 June 2023 the union said Appen had told them they would be reinstated with back pay.
Best for: Native speakers of in-demand languages and domain experts who want occasional, flexible remote tasks and can wait weeks or months for a project to open. Not for: Anyone who needs steady income or fast pay, expects a rate set by skill rather than country, or cannot afford work time that may be disputed after the fact.
Honest catches
- Pay here is third-party reports, not measured live from a job feed, so treat it as a benchmark rather than a guaranteed rate.
