Is Mindrift legit?

Researched October 2026 · 16 sources

Yes. Mindrift is run by Toloka, an Amsterdam AI data company backed by Bezos Expeditions, and it pays accepted tasks twice a month through Payoneer or Tipalti (PayPal). You are paid only for tasks that are accepted, tests and training are unpaid, and many wait weeks for tasks; some report accounts suspended or under review with earned pay on hold. It pays $100/hr typically (median $100/hr).

Actively hiring, pay independently measured from its live feed
Who is behind it

Mindrift has operated since 2023 under Toloka AI BV, an Amsterdam company that has built AI data services since 2014 and is led by CEO and founder Olga Megorskaya. In May 2025 Bezos Expeditions led a $72 million investment in Toloka; its parent, Nasdaq-listed Nebius Group, kept a majority economic stake but gave up voting control. Toloka's own crowd tasks, accounts and balances have since moved to Mindrift.

Getting paid

Mindrift pays per completed and accepted task, at a rate shown before you start. Work from the 1st to the 15th and from the 16th to month-end is paid on the 5th and 20th, through Payoneer or Tipalti (PayPal) by country. It takes no commission and withholds no tax; the payout providers may charge fees.

Fake Mindrift recruiters

No Mindrift-specific impersonation cases turned up. Mindrift says it never asks contributors for money, joining is free, real contact comes from official channels and the mindrift.ai domain, and the only way to work with it is an account on its platform. Fake recruiters often start on text, WhatsApp or Telegram and later ask you to pay.

What people praise

  • Many reviewers call the platform reliable, say they got paid, and like that every payment is tracked in the account.
  • Some reviewers call the training lessons and exams well designed.
  • Mindrift replies to 97% of negative Trustpilot reviews, usually within a week.

What people complain about

  • Workers report hours of unpaid training and tests before any paid task, then projects that closed or paused soon after.
  • Many pass every test and then get no tasks for weeks or months.
  • Rejected tasks earn nothing, and some say they failed tests they believed they had answered correctly, with no explanation.
  • Some say accounts were blocked or put under review with earned funds inside, and support did not answer.

What has gone wrong

  • September 2026. Several Trustpilot reviewers said in September 2026 that Mindrift suspended their accounts or put them under review without a clear reason, one with earned pay put on hold. Mindrift replied that suspensions and payment holds follow a review under its Terms, which let it freeze or delay payouts while it investigates.
  • March 2024. Follow the Money, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and Paper Trail Media found that Toloka workers did tasks training facial recognition for NTechLab and Tevian, Russian firms behind Moscow's camera network, including after EU sanctions in July 2023. Toloka said a Russian Yandex subsidiary, not its EU, Swiss or US entities, held those contracts.
Who it suits

Best for: Experts in coding, STEM, law or medicine who want per-task side income paid twice a month, and beginners happy to start on low-paid all-access tasks. Not for: Anyone who needs steady hours or pay for test time, and anyone living in an excluded place such as Russia, China, Kenya, Switzerland or Taiwan.

How to get started on Mindrift

Researched October 2026

Register at mindrift.ai and either start on open all-access tasks right away or apply to a specialized project with your CV, then pass that project's unpaid assessments or short AI interview, verify your identity with Persona, wait in a talent pool until the project launches, join its Discord, and do tasks that are paid on the 5th and 20th of each month.

Who can join

  • Be at least 18, or older if local law sets a higher minimum age.
  • Some projects with sensitive content require you to be 21 or older, and that work is capped at 2 hours per UTC day.
  • Not live in, or route pay to, a restricted place. On 15 October 2026 Mindrift's list included Russia, Belarus, China (with Hong Kong and Macau), Iran, Cuba, North Korea and occupied regions of Ukraine, and it did not support Kenya, Switzerland, Taiwan, DR Congo and a number of overseas territories. Using a VPN to get around this is grounds for termination and forfeits pending payments.
  • A Payoneer or Tipalti (PayPal) payout option in your country. If neither provider supports your country, you cannot join for now.
  • For specialized projects, real domain expertise and an up-to-date CV. All-access tasks need no domain expertise, prior experience or specific education.
  • One account per person, and no bots, scripts or AI agents doing tasks unless a task's terms expressly allow it.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Register and pick your route

Register on Mindrift. For all-access tasks (labeling, tagging images, comparing two AI outputs) you skip the CV and assessments, do a short onboarding and start. For specialized projects you go through a CV, assessment and onboarding process. You can add a CV later to be considered for specialized work.

  2. 2

Apply to a specialized project with your CV

Keep your CV current and honest. Mindrift checks it against current and upcoming projects and runs anti-fraud checks at the same time, and you may not hear back right away.

  3. 3

Pass the project's assessments or AI interview

You may get a language assessment, a skills test, a short automated AI interview you take when it suits you, or a combination. Each project has a minimum cut-off score, and medicine, high-precision sciences and coding get a more thorough review. Do not use AI tools in tests or the AI interview.

  4. 4

    Verify your identity with Persona

After you pass and are invited, you verify your identity through Mindrift's partner Persona. With accurate details it should take a few days.

  5. 5

Join a live project or the talent pool

If you match a live, high-priority project you usually move to onboarding quickly. If you match a confirmed project that has not launched, you go into a talent pool where no tasks exist yet, and client delays or cancellations can leave you without work for a while.

  6. 6

    Onboard and join Discord

When the project launches, read its guidelines and objectives and keep up with its messages. Joining the project's Discord server is the final step before work begins, so create a Discord account in advance and do not ignore the invitation.

  7. 7

Do tasks and get paid twice a month

Each task shows its pay before you start. You are paid for tasks that are completed and accepted; tasks that expire before you submit, or are rejected at quality check, are not paid. Payouts go out on the 5th and 20th through Payoneer or Tipalti (PayPal).

Project assessments and AI interview (specialized projects)

Specialized projects screen you before paid work with a language assessment, a skills test, a short automated AI interview, or a combination. Language tests check your grasp of nuance and context rather than native-level fluency, skills tests are meant to show your own knowledge, and each project sets a reasonable minimum cut-off score. Opportunities in medicine, high-precision sciences and coding get a more thorough review. Passing leads to an invitation and identity verification, not straight to tasks: you may wait in a talent pool until the project launches. Mindrift's terms say you are not paid for taking assessments. All-access tasks have no assessment.

Format

Online and taken on your own schedule; the AI interview is short and automated. Mindrift does not publish question counts, time limits, pass marks or a retake policy, and asks that no AI tools be used in tests or the AI interview.

How to prepare

  • Answer from your own knowledge with no AI tools: Mindrift asks for this so it can judge your real skills, and its terms ban automated methods unless a task allows them.
  • Make your CV accurate and specific to your domain: Mindrift matches it to current and upcoming projects and runs anti-fraud checks at the same time.
  • For a language assessment, focus on nuance and context; Mindrift says it does not test for native-level fluency.
  • Reply quickly to any invitation for an assessment, interview or verification, and create a Discord account in advance.
  • Read every instruction before you start: in Reddit reports reviewed by Annotation Academy, five accounts in 2025-2026 said task instructions were missing or contradictory.

Why people get rejected

  • Scoring below the project's minimum cut-off score.
  • Behaviour that Mindrift's anti-fraud checks treat as suspicious, such as a CV that does not hold up or AI-generated answers.
  • Problems completing Persona identity verification.
  • Living in, or routing pay to, a restricted or unsupported country, or using a VPN to hide your location.
  • Not a rejection: being placed in a talent pool for a project that has not launched, where no tasks exist yet.
  • In Reddit reports reviewed by Annotation Academy, five accounts said they failed tests they believed they had answered correctly, and support only told them they had failed.
How long it takes

Mindrift publishes no overall timeline. It says Persona verification should take a few days with accurate details, but there can be a significant gap between submitting an application and joining a project, and people placed in a talent pool wait until the client launches the project, or longer if the client delays or cancels it.

When you get paid

Mindrift pays per task, not per hour: each task's reward is fixed and shown before you start, and you are paid only for tasks that are completed and accepted. Pay periods run from the 1st to the 15th and from the 16th to month-end, and payouts are processed on the 5th and 20th (adjusted for weekends and holidays) through Payoneer or Tipalti (PayPal) depending on your country. Mindrift takes no commission and withholds no tax (you are an independent freelancer), but the payout providers may charge withdrawal or transfer fees, and minimums depend on the provider.

Tips to get accepted

  • Start on all-access tasks while a specialized application is pending: they need no CV or assessment, and you can add your CV later to be considered for specialized projects.
  • Know what each track pays before you invest time. Mindrift says all-access projects typically pay under $20 an hour, while its published maximums for specialized work reach $90 an hour for coding and STEM.
  • Check the eligibility list before you start: Mindrift cannot onboard people in unsupported places such as Kenya, Switzerland or Taiwan, and VPN use forfeits pending pay.
  • Budget for unpaid time: Mindrift's terms say you are not entitled to payment for taking assessments.
  • Submit before a task expires and read its guidelines first: expired tasks go back to the pool unpaid, and tasks rejected at quality check are not paid.
  • Treat it as side income. Mindrift says task flow is inconsistent after onboarding and that quiet periods between projects happen.

What isn't public

  • Mindrift does not publish pass marks, question counts, time limits or retake rules for its assessments, or an acceptance rate.
  • There is no published timeline from application to first paid task, and no estimate of how long people stay in a talent pool.
  • Rejection reasons are not explained; workers report being told only that they failed.
  • Minimum withdrawal amounts and provider fees are not stated; Mindrift says they depend on Payoneer or Tipalti.
  • Mindrift publishes only maximum rates by domain. The rate for each task is set per project and shown only in the task.
  • Several Mindrift blog articles show a byline date that differs from their page date (14 October 2026 in the metadata); this guide uses the byline dates.
  • Glassdoor and Indeed blocked our reading of their Mindrift pages, and we did not read Reddit directly: worker reports here come from Trustpilot and Annotation Academy's review of Reddit threads.
