About xAI (SpaceXAI)
xAI hires AI Tutors directly to train Grok: language tutors plus STEM, medicine, finance, legal, software-engineering, audio and video specialists, all remote, all annotating, evaluating and writing the data the model learns from. It is a frontier lab hiring its own trainers rather than a marketplace, so there is no intermediary taking a cut and the hourly band is printed in the posting. xAI merged into SpaceX in February 2026 and rebranded as SpaceXAI in July 2026; its job board and postings now carry the SpaceXSI name (Musk, 4 Oct 2026).

Is xAI (SpaceXAI) legit?
Researched October 2026 · 15 sourcesYes. xAI, now owned by SpaceX and renamed SpaceXSI, is a real AI lab that hires AI Tutors directly at posted US rates of $35 to $100 an hour, but it has cut and paused the tutor program before. The program changes fast: xAI cut about 500 generalist tutors in September 2025 and paused specialist hiring in June 2026, and tutors have worked under Hubstaff monitoring and on explicit material. It pays $40–$65/hr typically (median $40/hr).
Actively hiring, pay independently measured from its live feedxAI, the maker of the Grok chatbot, was bought by SpaceX in February 2026 and renamed SpaceXAI in July 2026; on 4 October 2026 Musk said it would become SpaceXSI, the name its job board now uses. It hires AI Tutors itself, as full-time, part-time or contract staff, rather than through a data marketplace. SpaceX listed its shares on Nasdaq on 12 June 2026.
Tutors are paid by xAI itself under an employment or contractor agreement. US postings state $35 to $100 an hour depending on the role, and eligible US staff get health insurance, a 401(k) and paid sick leave; non-US pay is shared only during recruitment. xAI does not publish its pay schedule or method.
Blind (all xAI staff, mostly engineers) 3.7/5 (15 reviews). Read October 2026.
15 open roles on xAI (SpaceXAI), independently checked 18 Oct 2026.
Remote from anywhere in the world, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone fit and the needs of the role. xAI states it cannot hire in Wyoming or Illinois and does not sponsor visas. Pay is published for US-based candidates only.
No xAI-specific impersonation cases turned up. Real AI Tutor openings are on xAI's own Greenhouse board (job-boards.greenhouse.io/xai, now headed SpaceXSI), where you apply with a resume. Be wary of anyone who contacts you first on chat: the FTC says never pay to get a job and to ignore unexpected job texts, WhatsApp or Telegram messages.
What people praise
- Pay is printed on every tutor posting for US candidates, from $35 an hour for language roles to $100 an hour for Legal & Compliance.
- Tutors work for the lab itself, and eligible US positions include health insurance, a 401(k) plan and paid sick leave.
- xAI staff on Blind rate compensation and benefits 4.5 out of 5, its highest score.
What people complain about
- In July 2025 tutors were told to install Hubstaff monitoring software, on personal laptops if they had no company device; one said they would resign over it.
- Some tutors say skipping explicit or disturbing material is hard in practice, because it means turning down a team lead's assignment.
- xAI staff on Blind, mostly engineers, rate work-life balance 1.5 out of 5, its lowest score.
- Outside the US, postings give no pay figure at all: it is shared only during recruitment.
What has gone wrong
- September 2025. On 12 September 2025 xAI told about 500 data annotation workers, a third of a 1,500-person team, that it no longer needed most generalist AI tutors. They were paid to 30 November or their contract end but lost system access at once, and xAI said it would grow its specialist tutor team tenfold.
- September 2025. Business Insider reported in September 2025 that 12 of more than 30 current and former xAI workers it interviewed had met sexually explicit material on Grok projects, including user requests for AI-generated child sexual abuse material. Many had signed consent forms for sensitive content; xAI did not comment.
- June 2026. Bloomberg reported on 3 June 2026 that xAI had paused hiring specialists to train Grok. A summary of the report says the pause was temporary and partly due to HR being unable to keep up with applications, and that a second wave of cuts had hit the team in March 2026.
Best for: Native speakers of the posted languages, published writers, lawyers, humanities scholars and video editors who want hourly work straight from a frontier lab, with benefits for eligible US staff. Not for: Anyone who needs visa sponsorship or lives in Wyoming or Illinois, anyone unwilling to accept work monitoring or explicit material, and anyone who needs stable long-term hours.

How to get started on xAI (SpaceXAI)
Researched October 2026Pick an AI Tutor posting on xAI's own Greenhouse job board, apply with your resume and the evidence the role asks for (language levels, portfolio, credentials or writing samples); applicants then report a CodeSignal assessment and a short video interview, followed by a conditional offer, a background check and onboarding as a full-time, part-time or contract tutor paid by xAI itself.
Who can join
- The right to work from your country without sponsorship. xAI says it cannot provide visa sponsorship, and in the US it cannot hire in Wyoming or Illinois.
- A location the posting allows. Most tutor roles may be done remotely from anywhere, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone fit and the role's needs, but some are narrower: the French tutor role, for example, is open only in the United States and Canada.
- For language roles: native proficiency in the language, English at B2 level or above with clear, natural speech for recordings, and the ability to transcribe audio accurately across accents.
- For the Writing role: verifiable proof of qualification in at least one specialty. Most specialties ask for 5+ years of professional work and a public portfolio; Creative Fiction asks for at least two of major publishing deals, 50,000+ sales, 10+ stories in major outlets, major awards or critical acclaim.
- For Legal & Compliance: a J.D. or foreign equivalent, at least 2 years of practicing law in a listed practice area, and bar admission or a similar legal certification.
- For Video roles: a portfolio of excellent video work (edited shorts, motion graphics, VFX breakdowns or compositing reels) and hands-on skill with tools such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects or Nuke.
- Not working for a competitor at the same time. The application asks whether you currently work with companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Scale AI, Invisible Technologies, Google or Meta, and says you may not work for SpaceXSI and a competing company concurrently.
- If you work on your own device: a Chromebook, a Mac on macOS 11.0 or later, or Windows 10 or later.
Step by step
- 1
Find an AI Tutor posting on xAI's board
xAI posts tutor roles on its own Greenhouse board, now under the name SpaceXSI. On 15 October 2026 it listed 19 AI Tutor roles among 302 postings: 13 languages (Croatian, Finnish, French, Hausa, Italian, Khmer, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish and Yoruba) plus Writing, Humanities, Design, Legal & Compliance, Video and Video (Weekend).
- 2
Read the requirements and the US pay band
Each posting lists basic and preferred qualifications and an hourly band for US-based candidates: $35-$45 for language roles, $35-$75 for Writing, Design and Humanities, $40-$75 for both Video roles and $50-$100 for Legal & Compliance. For international candidates the posting only says pay information is given during recruitment.
- 3
Apply with your resume and the role's evidence
Every form asks for your resume, legal name, location and the country you will work from, sponsorship and Wyoming or Illinois questions, full- or part-time preference and the competitor question. The Writing form adds your specialty, a 100-word list of qualifying accomplishments, verification evidence in the order the specialty lists it, and two writing samples of up to 1,000 words each in one document.
- 4
Take the assessment (as applicants report it)
xAI's postings do not describe the screening. Applicants on Glassdoor, as summarized by aitrainer.work on 4 October 2026, report an emailed invitation to a CodeSignal assessment within a few days of applying, for tutor roles in general and not only software engineering; writing-heavy tracks report a timed, proctored writing task after it.
- 5
- 6
Get an offer, a background check and onboarding
Applicants report a conditional offer first, then a background check, then onboarding on xAI's own annotation software.
- 7
Start work as xAI's tutor
Tutor roles are full-time, part-time or contractor positions depending on the role and the candidate. Contractors set their own hours with no fixed commitment, though most projects need at least 10 hours a week. Eligible US positions include health insurance, a 401(k) plan and paid sick leave.
CodeSignal assessment and video interview (as applicants report them)
xAI does not publish its tutor screening. Its postings say role details come during the interview process, and the Writing role says applicants must give verifiable proof of specialty qualifications. Applicants on Glassdoor, as summarized by aitrainer.work on 4 October 2026, describe a CodeSignal assessment invitation within a few days of applying (for tutor roles in general), a timed, proctored writing task for writing-heavy tracks, then a 20 to 30 minute video call with the team, and sometimes a final interview. The same summary says the assessments test the skill the job uses: judging an AI answer against a standard and explaining why.
Format
An online CodeSignal assessment, then a short live video interview, per applicant reports. Specialist tracks are also screened on the credentials, portfolio and samples submitted with the application.
How to prepare
- Gather your proof before you apply: the Writing form wants evidence for each qualification in the order the specialty lists it, plus two samples of up to 1,000 words in one document.
- Rate your levels honestly. Language forms ask for your English and target-language level on the A1 to C2 scale and the dialect you speak most fluently; the roles need native proficiency and at least B2 English.
- Practise the core skill: judging an AI answer against a standard and explaining why, which applicants say the assessments test.
- For audio and language roles, prepare a quiet room and a clear recording voice; postings ask for natural vocal delivery suitable for recordings.
- Answer the competitor question accurately: the form says you may not work for SpaceXSI and a competing AI company at the same time.
Why people get rejected
- Applying from somewhere xAI cannot hire: Wyoming, Illinois, a country outside the posting's area, or needing visa sponsorship.
- Missing a hard credential, such as no J.D. or under 2 years of practice for Legal & Compliance, or a mainly free-verse record for Poetry Writing.
- Claims that cannot be verified: the Writing form asks whether your portfolio includes NDA-covered or unverifiable claims, and asks for proof of each qualification.
- Working for a competing AI company at the same time.
- No open role for your field: generalist tutor roles ended in September 2025, and in June 2026 Bloomberg reported a pause in specialist hiring, so a strong application can still wait.
xAI publishes no timeline from application to offer. Applicants on Glassdoor, as summarized by aitrainer.work, report the emailed CodeSignal invitation arriving within a few days of applying; no source we could open gives the time from interview to offer. The steps after the interview are a conditional offer, then a background check, then onboarding.
Tutors are hired and paid by xAI itself (now SpaceXSI), not through a marketplace wallet, as full-time, part-time or contract staff depending on the role and the candidate. US postings state hourly bands from $35 to $100 depending on the role; international candidates get their pay information during recruitment. Benefits for eligible US positions include health insurance, a 401(k) plan and paid sick leave. xAI does not publish its pay schedule or payment method.
Tips to get accepted
- Outside the US, ask for the rate and its currency during recruitment: postings give no non-US figure at all.
- Expect time tracking. In July 2025 xAI told tutors to install Hubstaff and clock in and out, on personal computers if they had no company device; after Business Insider asked, it let people waiting for a company laptop hold off.
- The Video (Weekend) role has set hours on Saturday and Sunday, and its full-time schedules typically run Saturday to Wednesday or Thursday to Monday.
- Know what some projects involve. In a September 2025 Business Insider report, 12 of more than 30 xAI workers said they had met sexually explicit material, and six said opting out was hard because it meant declining a team lead's assignment.
- Hiring can stop without notice: Bloomberg reported in June 2026 that xAI had temporarily paused hiring specialist AI tutors, partly because HR could not keep up with applications.
- Apply only through xAI's own board, and be wary of anyone who contacts you first claiming to recruit for xAI: no legitimate employer asks for a fee, bank details or ID over chat.
What isn't public
- xAI does not publish its screening steps, assessment content, interview length or a timeline. The assessment and interview described here come from applicant reports on Glassdoor as summarized by aitrainer.work; Glassdoor blocked our own reading, so we could not check those reports directly.
- Pay outside the US is not published: every tutor posting says international candidates get the information during recruitment.
- xAI does not publish how often or by what method tutors are paid, or whether contractors are paid through payroll or a contractor platform.
- How xAI decides whether a candidate is hired full-time, part-time or as a contractor is not published, and neither is whether assessment or interview time is paid.
- xAI has not said whether specialist hiring fully resumed after the pause Bloomberg reported in June 2026; 19 tutor postings were live on 15 October 2026.
- The company name is in transition: postings and the board now say SpaceXSI while the board address still uses 'xai', and xAI has not said what, if anything, the rename changes for tutors.

Is xAI (SpaceXAI) a scam?
No. xAI (SpaceXAI) is a real company. No xAI-specific impersonation cases turned up. Does xAI (SpaceXAI) pay?
Yes. Real, direct work from a frontier lab, with the rate printed in the posting and no intermediary, but it is not steady employment. In September 2025 xAI cut about 500 roles, a third of a 1,500-person data-annotation team, ending generalist AI Tutor positions while saying it would 'immediately surge our Specialist AI tutor team by 10x' across STEM, finance, medicine and safety; today's board is exactly that shape. Glassdoor reviewers in the AI Tutor role rate it 4.4/5, above the 3.8/5 for xAI overall, though on only 19 reviews, and Indeed reviewers call the work interesting but highly unstable, with priorities that shift under you. Payouts: Hired directly by the company, not through a marketplace wallet: tutor roles are offered as full-time, part-time or contractor depending on the role and the candidate, so pay runs through xAI's own payroll or contract terms. Cadence and method are not published. Is xAI (SpaceXAI) worth it?
xAI (SpaceXAI) pays $40–$65/hr typically (median $40/hr). It rewards credentialed experts who clear its assessment far more than open generalist work. Worker sentiment: Blind (all xAI staff, mostly engineers) 3.7/5 (15 reviews).
How does xAI (SpaceXAI) pay out?
Hired directly by the company, not through a marketplace wallet: tutor roles are offered as full-time, part-time or contractor depending on the role and the candidate, so pay runs through xAI's own payroll or contract terms. Cadence and method are not published. Eligible US positions include health insurance, a 401(k) and paid sick leave; contractors set their own hours, with most projects needing roughly 10 hours a week.
Where can you work for xAI (SpaceXAI)?
Remote from anywhere in the world, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone fit and the needs of the role. xAI states it cannot hire in Wyoming or Illinois and does not sponsor visas. Pay is published for US-based candidates only.
How do I become an AI Tutor at xAI?
Apply to a specific AI Tutor posting on xAI's Greenhouse board with your resume and the evidence the role asks for. On 15 October 2026 there were 19 tutor roles: 13 languages plus Writing, Humanities, Design, Legal & Compliance and two Video roles.
Does xAI have an assessment for AI Tutors?
xAI does not publish one, but applicants report an emailed CodeSignal assessment within a few days of applying, then a 20 to 30 minute video interview; writing-heavy tracks add a timed, proctored writing task.
How much do xAI AI Tutors make?
US postings state $35-$45 an hour for language roles, $35-$75 for Writing, Design and Humanities, $40-$75 for Video and $50-$100 for Legal & Compliance, depending on experience, skills, education, location and qualifications. Pay for international candidates is given during recruitment.
Are xAI AI Tutors employees or contractors?
Either: roles are offered as full-time, part-time or contractor positions depending on the role and the candidate. Contractors set their own hours, though most projects need at least 10 hours a week, and eligible US positions include health insurance, a 401(k) and paid sick leave.
Can I be an xAI AI Tutor from outside the US?
Usually yes: most tutor roles may be done remotely from anywhere in the world, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone fit and the role's needs. xAI does not sponsor visas, and in the US it cannot hire in Wyoming or Illinois.
Can I work for other AI training platforms at the same time?
Not for a competitor. The application asks whether you currently work with companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Scale AI, Invisible Technologies, Google or Meta, and says you may not work for SpaceXSI and a competing company concurrently.
