Applying to OpenTrain AI, step by step
Researched October 2026Sign up free at app.opentrain.ai as an AI Trainer, verify your email, finish the 9-step profile wizard (resume first), then apply to jobs one by one with a proposal (some add an AI interview, an ID check or a location check); once an employer hires you, complete each funded milestone and get paid through Stripe after the employer approves it.
Who can join
- A computer. On a phone, a tablet or a browser window narrower than 1,024 pixels you cannot apply or start an AI interview, the trainer workspace asks you to continue on desktop, and most jobs need a laptop for the work itself.
- A general resume (PDF, DOCX or TXT, up to 10 MB). It is the required first step of the profile wizard; a separate data labeling resume is optional.
- A bank account in a country OpenTrain can pay through Stripe: 120 countries on its list (last updated 1 May 2026), including the US, the UK, India, the Philippines, Nigeria, Kenya, Pakistan, Egypt and Mexico. Brazil and China are not on it, and OpenTrain says it cannot pay out to a country that is not listed.
- Whatever each job asks for. Employers set the software, data types, label types, languages, experience level, talent type and eligible locations, and the matching engine filters or ranks jobs by them.
- For location-restricted jobs: a profile country that is one of the job's eligible locations, and a browser that shares your current location with app.opentrain.ai. The check runs again on every attempt.
- For jobs that require it: a government ID for an identity check through Didit (or Stripe Identity if Didit is unavailable), which may also ask for a selfie. You get two attempts.
- No fee. OpenTrain says it is 100% free for freelancers, with no fees, no subscriptions and no credit card.
Step by step
- 1
Create a free AI Trainer account
Sign up at app.opentrain.ai and choose the AI Trainer account type (it cannot be changed later; a wrong choice means a new account with another email). OpenTrain emails a 6-digit code; enter it to verify your email and you go straight into the onboarding wizard.
- 2
Finish the 9-step profile wizard
Upload your resume (it auto-fills later steps), then add your country, city, phone and LinkedIn URL; your AI training experience level and the data and label types you have worked with; the annotation tools you have used; education and languages; other work history; your hourly rate and weekly availability; a profile title and industries; then review and submit. Your profile must be live before you can apply.
- 3
Find jobs that match your profile
Find Jobs has a Recommended tab ranked by your skills, languages, labeling experience, location and experience level, a Search tab with filters (software, data type, label type, experience level, budget type, hours per week, project length) and a Saved tab. Open the job page and read the required software and data types before applying.
- 4
Submit a proposal
Click Submit a proposal. A requirements card shows All Job Requirements Met or lists what is missing (most items are warnings, but a failed location check blocks you). If the job requires an AI interview it opens first; then you enter your bid (hourly, per label or fixed price) and submit it to the employer.
- 5
Complete the AI interview if the job has one
The employer chooses a text chat or a recorded voice interview. It collects details such as your LinkedIn URL, years of AI training experience, weekly availability and past platforms, plus any custom questions. A voice interview cannot be paused, ends if two questions go unanswered, and can be started over once.
- 6
Verify your ID if OpenTrain asks
For jobs that require it, OpenTrain asks after you submit the proposal. In Settings, Verification, give consent and select Verify my identity; Didit checks your ID and may ask for a selfie. Use a clear photo in good light: you have two attempts. OpenTrain keeps the result but not your ID number or images.
- 7
For partner jobs, finish on the partner's site
Jobs marked Sourced via Micro1, Turing, SME Careers, Handshake AI or Alignerr open the partner's own application. The partner decides on hiring and sets its assessments, training, pay and contract terms, and you check the status on the partner's site, not in OpenTrain's My Proposals tab.
- 8
Wait for the employer's decision
Your proposal shows Pending until the employer accepts it (a contract is created and you are Hired), declines it, or sends you a message. Review time is up to each employer, and larger and recruiting-configured jobs tend to take longer.
- 9
Set up Stripe payouts and get paid per milestone
In Settings, Payouts, click Add Payout Method and complete Stripe's hosted form (do not create a separate account on stripe.com; your payout country is locked at setup). On each Active & Funded milestone, finish the work and click Complete & Request Payout; once the employer approves, OpenTrain marks it Paid and pays your bank.
AI interview (switched on per job by the employer)
OpenTrain has no single platform-wide test. Employers can require an AI interview on a job before they review proposals, so every applicant answers the same structured questions: commonly your LinkedIn URL, years of AI training, data labeling or annotation experience, weekly availability and the platforms and task types you have worked on, plus any custom questions. Answers are saved to a record the employer reviews alongside your resume and profile. Jobs can also add an ID check or a location check, and partner jobs run their own assessments on the partner's site.
Format
A text chat or a recorded voice interview, chosen by the employer, inside the proposal window on a computer. In a voice interview you answer out loud, cannot pause, and the interview ends if two questions go unanswered; leaving the tab is flagged for review, and you can start over once. Progress is saved if your connection drops.
How to prepare
- Read the interviewer's first message: it often lists all the questions up front.
- Be specific. OpenTrain's own example of a strong answer is 'I have 2 years of experience labeling text and image data on Scale AI and Labelbox', not 'I have experience'.
- Paste your full LinkedIn URL (linkedin.com/in/yourname); the system checks the format and asks again if it cannot recognize it.
- If you have no AI training experience, say so plainly: a clear 'no' completes the field.
- For a voice interview, use a working microphone (a headset is best), a quiet room and a stable connection without a VPN or strict firewall, and answer as soon as each question ends.
- Fill in your profile first, with one labeling experience entry per tool, so the requirements card does not flag missing software or data types.
Why people get rejected
- Leaving the AI interview unfinished: OpenTrain says proposals without a completed interview are typically skipped.
- Vague answers, or a LinkedIn answer without the actual URL, which keep the interviewer asking.
- Failing the location check: a profile country outside the job's eligible locations, location sharing turned off, or being outside an eligible location when you apply.
- Two unanswered questions or long pauses in a voice interview, which end it.
- Using both ID verification attempts on blurry or poorly lit photos.
- A profile missing the software, data types or languages the job requires, which makes the proposal less competitive.
OpenTrain publishes no timeline from sign-up to first contract. A proposal stays Pending until the employer accepts, declines or messages you, review time is up to each employer (some review daily, others wait for a larger pool), and larger or recruiting-configured jobs tend to take longer. If a proposal has been pending unusually long, OpenTrain asks you to email support@opentrain.ai with the job link.
Pay runs through contract milestones. The employer funds each milestone before you work on it (Active & Funded). When you finish, click Complete & Request Payout in the Contract tab; the milestone moves to Pending approval, and after the employer approves it OpenTrain marks it Paid and starts payout to the bank account you connected through Stripe-hosted setup. OpenTrain uses a daily payout schedule, and bank processing times vary by country. Payout invoices and job statements are in the Reports tab.
Tips to get accepted
- Add a separate labeling experience entry for every platform or tool you have used, even if the work overlapped: employers filter by software, and each tool listed separately improves your matches.
- Keep your resumes consistent. If you upload a second resume later, OpenTrain cross-checks it against the first, and significant mismatches may affect your profile status.
- Before applying to a location-restricted job, allow location for app.opentrain.ai in your browser and turn on location services; the check looks at both your profile country and where you are now.
- Check the milestone is funded, and for how much, before you start work: when one reviewer was paid $1 on an $80 task, OpenTrain's reply was that the rate is shown in the milestone's deposited funds.
- Do not delete your profile to start over. OpenTrain told one reviewer that deleting a profile loses your progress and applications.
- Expect waits. Trustpilot reviewers describe applications sitting in Pending or Under Review for over a week, and some for months; apply to several matching jobs rather than waiting on one.
What isn't public
- OpenTrain publishes no acceptance rate and no timeline from sign-up to first contract: each employer reviews proposals on its own schedule.
- How AI interview answers are scored, and by whom, is not published. Employers make the hiring decision, and OpenTrain describes no pass or fail notice.
- Pay is set job by job (your bid or the employer's budget), so there is no platform-wide rate; for partner jobs, pay and requirements come from the partner's listing.
- Who pays OpenTrain's published 10% marketplace fee and $9.95 contract initiation fee is not stated on its pricing page. Its careers page says freelancers pay no fees, and its terms allow talent-side fees in general without naming any.
- Whether onboarding, training or interview time is paid depends on the employer or partner; OpenTrain sets no rule (for partner jobs it says to ask the partner).
- Bank processing times after a payout starts are not published beyond 'processing times vary by country and bank'.

Applying to OpenTrain AI: questions
How do I get accepted on OpenTrain AI?
There is no single acceptance. You create a free AI Trainer account, verify your email, complete the 9-step profile wizard, and then apply to each job with a proposal; the employer decides whether to hire you.
Does OpenTrain AI have an interview or test?
Only where the employer turns one on: a text or voice AI interview inside the proposal window that collects details such as your LinkedIn URL, years of AI training experience, weekly availability and past platforms. Partner jobs may run their own assessments on the partner's site.
How long does OpenTrain take to respond?
It depends on the employer. A proposal stays Pending until the employer accepts, declines or messages you, and larger and recruiting-configured jobs tend to take longer. If one has been pending unusually long, email support@opentrain.ai with the job link.
How does OpenTrain AI pay?
Through milestones: the employer funds each one, you request payout when the work is done, and after the employer approves it OpenTrain pays your connected bank account through Stripe on a daily payout schedule.
Which countries can OpenTrain AI pay?
The 120 countries on its payout list (last updated 1 May 2026), including the US, the UK, India, the Philippines, Nigeria, Kenya, Pakistan, Egypt, Mexico and most of Europe. Brazil and China are not listed, and OpenTrain says it cannot pay out to an unlisted country today.
Does OpenTrain AI charge workers a fee?
No. Its careers page says it is 100% free for freelancers, with no fees, no subscriptions and no credit card.
Can I use OpenTrain AI on my phone?
Mostly not. Applying, starting an AI interview and the trainer workspace need a computer, and most jobs need a laptop for the work; a phone can open the ID check and some settings.
How long does it take to hear back from OpenTrain AI?
OpenTrain publishes no timeline from sign-up to first contract. A proposal stays Pending until the employer accepts, declines or messages you, review time is up to each employer (some review daily, others wait for a larger pool), and larger or recruiting-configured jobs tend to take longer. If a proposal has been pending unusually long, OpenTrain asks you to email support@opentrain.ai with the job link.
Does OpenTrain AI have an assessment?
Yes: AI interview (switched on per job by the employer).
